What did you want to be when you grew up?

It sounds a bit ‘Miss World’, but I was never really interested in making money, I wanted to do something that made a valuable contribution to society. I wanted to be what I am now.

The only difference is I saw myself leading a small organisation, but I’ve ended up running a large one.

“All public services – transport, police and ambulance etc, would benefit from a social enterprise approach.”

Who do you most want to inspire?

I want to inspire people who are running small social enterprises to become bigger and to inspire standard businesses to turn their company into a social enterprise.

I do want to inspire young people, as everyone does, but I also want to get through to people who haven’t previously thought about this type of business model.

What services do you feel are missing in communities?

All public services – transport, police and ambulance etc., would benefit from a social enterprise approach. They need to be more flexible and more focused on the end user.

What would be your best piece of advice to a future social entrepreneur?

Maintain a steady state between self-doubt and ambition.

How do you relax?

I like flying my kite; I read and play with my kids; and, I like to rest too. How do I do that? I lie down and close my eyes!

Who in the public eye do you think would make a good social entrepreneur?

James Strachan, who was chair of the RNID until recently. He’s a great businessman and an all-round good chap.
