Maria tells us why she loves being part of a social enterprise

How did you develop a 'social' view of society?

I think I’ve always had it. I always wanted to have a job that had a positive social benefit. I believe people can do anything if they are given real opportunities. Being chief executive of a social enterprise enables me to use our organisation’s resources to the best wider benefit.

How does your enterprise work?

It provides a range of support and community development, arts and enterprise activities, which give a voice and open up opportunities for people. Funded through contracts and sales, our staff provide products and services that deliver these opportunities.

“Find a gap in the market and make it work. Be flexible and open to how things can evolve.”

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

The lead singer of a band.

What advice would you give to budding social entrepreneurs?

Find a gap in the market and make it work. Be flexible and open to how things can evolve.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?

The best is seeing people who have experienced very difficult things in their life completely transform it, and then motivate others to do the same. The worst is dealing with people who do not ‘get it’ and work in a way that puts other people down.
