Business:Sunlight Development Trust/Enterprises
Role: CEO
Where: Started in Kent
Peter previously worked for a number of non-governmental organisations such as Oxfam and Greenpeace before establishing ‘project sunlight’ seven years ago. He has developed the project to become one of the country’s most successful and high profile healthy living centres and one of the region’s most rapidly developing and diverse social enterprises.
The centre includes a local primary health practice with six GPs, a pharmacy, a family centre and base for children’s services, a nursery group, office space for eight charities and a number of community meeting rooms.
There’s also a community hall and a number of enterprises, including the living room community café, sunlight recording studios and radio sunlight. The same building is also home to over 90 resident organisations and complementary health practitioners.
At least 87% of all the trust’s running costs are funded by social enterprise, Café Sunlight operates in Rochester, Chatham and Rainham with further rapid expansion happening.
The Sunlight Trust and Sunlight enterprises operate with a team of 34 staff, supported by 108 volunteers (in 2007). Currently, all staff started out as service users – including ex-offenders - before going on to become volunteers, and then moving into paid positions.
