Latest news: Ambassadors win Olympic contract |
|
A joint social enterprise, run by ambassadors Dai Powell of HCT and Stephen Sears of ECT, has won a contract to provide transport at the 2012 Olympics.
The new business E&HCT - a collaboration between the two community transport operations - began operating a bus service to take workers between key areas on the Olympic site on 14 April 2008.
The social enterprise beat five other transport operators - National Express Group, East London Bus Group, First Capital, Metroline Services and NCP Services - to win the four-year contract.
It aims to reduce the number of private cars on local roads while
reducing congestion and environmental pollutants. The organisation will
also be employing up to 45 local people, targeting those who have
experienced long-term unemployment.
The transport bid documents indicated that contracts would only be
awarded to organisations with a turnover of more than £5m. ECT and
HCT's combined turnover is well over £50m.
Olympic Delivery Authority director of transport, Hugh Sumner, said:
“E&HCT were the successful bidders for this contract due to their
commitment to making a difference to the areas in which it operates,
primarily targeting the unemployed locally, who they then recruit and
train to drive their vehicles.
"E&HCT is truly dedicated to
making public transport available to all and I am confident it will
bring many benefits to Stratford."
