Ken Orchard's enterprise given mark of approval

The secretary of state for the environment, Hilary Benn MP, has awarded Mid-Devon Community Recycling (MDCR), run by ambassador Ken Orchard, with the Social Enterprise Mark.

MDCR are the first community recycling company to receive this prestigious award, which show customers they are buying from a social enterprise and creating a social or environmental benefit.

Ken said: “We're delighted to become a holder of the Social Enterprise Mark. We believe our social enterprise status is an increasingly powerful selling point for us - something unique, that gives us a real edge over conventional competitors. Holding the Mark will help us to shout about that edge.”

Hilary Benn said: “I am delighted to present this award to Mid-Devon Community Recycling. I wholeheartedly support community schemes that encourage people to increase recycling.”

The Social Enterprise Mark is currently available to organisations trading in South West England. However, Peter Holbrook, an ambassador and CEO of The Sunlight Development Trust, is calling for it to be available nationwide. He said: “We need to distinguish ourselves from those who may be trading in the ethical market but who are in it to make private profit and from the corporate social responsibility and ‘greenwash’ of big business."
