“I wanted to be a business owner, but I wasn’t sure what kind of business I wanted to own”
– Claudine Reid
Name: Claudine Reid
Age: 33
Business: PJ’s Community Service
Role: Director of operations
Where: founded in Croydon
Claudine is director of operations for PJ’s Community Service in Croydon, which provides home shopping and care to the borough's vulnerable adults, older people and the housebound. By mid-2007 it had created employment for around 80 people in Croydon.
The firm also owns a 9,000-square foot facility in Thornton Heath, where local community groups hold their events.
At a Black History Month reception in 2007, held at the House of Commons, Ruth Kelly MP singled out Claudine for praise. She said: "Opening up more opportunities for ethnic minority women, such as Claudine Reid, to become involved in social enterprise will not only make the most of their skills, but also reap long term positive economic effects for society through regenerating communities and building good community relations."
