“People are crucial to my work”
–
Chris Allwood
Name: Chris Allwood
Age: 29
Business: Auction My Stuff
Role: Manager
Where: Started in East London
After graduation, Chris worked on fair
trade projects and then ran a centre for asylum seekers. In 2005, he
joined Community
as new business development manager.
Auction My Stuff is the first venture
and enables unemployed young people to get the skills, experience and
confidence for work. They sell ‘stuff’ donated by companies
through their eBay shop.
The ‘stuff’ comes from private
companies, individuals and celebrity donations or via other
charities, such as Oxfam and Crisis, with whom they have sales agent
agreements. For example, in 2007, the company was given hundreds of
re-usable water bottles left over from the London Marathon to sell.
Young people come on work placements
for 10 weeks from a New Deal project, or as volunteers recruited from
other projects. Whilst there, they are trained to set, work at and
achieve goals. Chris has seen dramatic transformations in the way young
people develop and express their abilities.
Chris tells us
what drives him and why he wants to get City types into social
enterprise
