Founded: East London

Sam is a GP at the Bromley By Bow centre in East London. The centre recognises a holistic approach to health and healthcare and the importance of education, the environment, arts and employment.

It also includes more than one hundred projects/social enterprises, such as complimentary therapies, art studios, a nursery, community care projects, landscape design, graphic design, public art and a community café.

It is a unique partnership between the private, public and voluntary sector, the community and patients. The majority of the centre’s users come from minority ethnic groups living in one of the most deprived areas of the country.

The centre formally became one of the government’s Healthy Living Centres in 2000 and achieved Beacon Status in 2001. Sam himself was previously deputy chair of the British Medical Association and is a director of partnerships for Health UK, a company set up to build new GP surgeries across the country.

In 1999 he was given an OBE for services to inner city primary care, and in 2006 received the World Family Doctors Europe international award of excellence in healthcare.
