Where – Started in South Shropshire

Since 1999, Jean has been the CEO of South Shropshire Furniture Scheme - a furniture reuse and recycling scheme covering the Shropshire district - an area of 400sq miles with a population of 41,000.

Under Jean’s influence, the scheme has diversified and developed. It now includes carpentry, electrical, computer recycling and craft workshops and also a retail outlet – the Renaissance Centre – where donated items are imaginatively rejuvenated. The items are then sold on and the cash generated is used to support the business.

Work is undertaken in the scheme’s Ludlow workshops, delivering a range of vocational and recreational training for all abilities. The scheme now has a turnover of more than £370,000, of which only 30% comes from grants.

Jean tells when she developed a social view of society and why she thinks charities could benefit from becoming social enterprises
